Sanctuary is an original oil on canvas, stretched over a high quality, warp-resistant Jacksons Art stretcher. It is varnished using a UV protective varnish which gives a slight shine to the painting surface. Painted on deep edge canvas, it is ready to hang.
This painting is part of my ongoing series of figures underwater where I am interested in creating an otherworldly atmosphere below the surface. I want the viewer to experience a different sensory experience to that on dry land, a quieter world where the lighting is moody and there is a sense of the voyeur, where we see what is otherwise unseen.
This painting was painted following a photoshoot in an outdoor pool in Kefalonia, Greece with three models. I wanted to create a dynamic composition with movement and rhythm, and the pale turquoise of the water was a result of the strong sunlight flooding the pool.
The title, Sanctuary came from how I felt about the painting when I looked at it - it reminds me of heavenly, sunny, summer days which go on forever and when the light is at its most beautiful. The scene is one of relaxation and fun, a safe place of beauty below the surface. This painting has a real luminosity about it.
